How much do environmental disruption, poverty, and limited healthcare access contribute to the emergence and spread of diseases like hantavirus?

"...usually requires close contact to do so." I have been hearing this statement since day one. Is there *any* evidence that it is true? The one outbreak of Andes virus infection written up in the New England Journal of Medicine did not give that impression at all.
